considered military service a sin, and so of course as a Constantinian regime their realm "manifestly depended for its survival upon the willingness of its members to sin." He quotes Warren Treadgold: The reluctance of the Byzantine church to accept that ends could justify means (even to the point of insisting that killing enemy soldiers in battle was sinful) led to a feeling that no one could engage in politics, war, or commerce without some moral taint. This put the Byzantines at a certain disadvantage. But the church could forgive even the worst political sins of someone who performed services for Christianity [the concept of

Furthermore, it is not just a mirror on which we project our own subjectivities; its voices are real voices. But that does not mean the Bible is "objective" in the modern sense of being "out there" on its own, somehow above the contingencies of ordinary human language and literary remembrance. Now I don't want this to turn into a debate over modernist epistemology. So I will just put your point in a different way to see if it calms your worries. As an evangelical theologian, I claim

2003 "The Mission and Message of Jesus" chapter 3 (by N.T. Wright) "Jesus Before and After Easter: Jewish Mystic and Christian Messiah" (by Marcus Borg) Since these two chapters (and possibly every future pair) dovetail and sometimes criticize each other, it seems appropriate to treat them together. Here we see each scholar's methodology bear its first fruit. Wright leads in chapter 3 with a portrait of Jesus in seven "broad strokes": Jesus was a first-century Jewish prophet announcing God's kingdom (33). He believed that the kingdom was breaking in to Israel's history in and through his own presence and work (37) ... and

Tutu also appealed to the anti-war rallies at the war's outset as hope for nonviolence and signs that nonviolent means had not been exhausted, failing of course to mention that they were organized not by activists for nonviolence but by the Leninist-Stalinists of International ANSWER and that Saddam's intention was not to back down but to outlive the UN sanctions, rebuild his military, and fight another day. The Bush Administration has certainly needed to tell a lot more of the truth behind the goals of this war, and it still does. But so do the war's

over the years? GAEDE: Answering this kind of question is always risky since I'm imposing my perceptions on God’s intentions. Nevertheless, God does lead and He leads in and out of careers, along with lots of other places. Where I grasped a sense of God’s calling was clearly at Westmont as an undergraduate.
